Joe O'Malley, one of Ozwest's Directors, started the company from scratch in April 1976. Joe is a 'hands-on' Director, as comfortable behind his Pilot vehicle's wheel as he is in customers' boardrooms. Within Ozwest, Joe arranges all permits, oversees the company's Road Pilots' training, and supports staff in their commitment to 'going the extra mile'.
Joe is an active contributor to his chosen field. He previously sat on the transport industry's Government Steering committee, was Chairperson for the Pilot division of WA Road Transport Association, and is a member of the WA Road Transport Association. He keeps up-to-date in his knowledge of the industry, and is frequently called upon to provide logistical advice to different industry groups.
Reflecting on career highlights and lessons learned, Joe remembers the excitement of Ozwest's first $1 million turnover, and an early employer (who started and ran a very successful business during the Depression) advising "if you look after your staff well, they will look after your business well". This also includes all of Ozwest's valued Subcontractors. A member of the WA Mining Club for ten years, Joe finds the background information the monthly luncheons provide very helpful for running Ozwest, and he appreciates how he meets mining people he might otherwise not encounter.
